What is Reflexology?

Lifetime Member Association of Reflexologists (LMAR)

Reflexology is a complementary therapy that involves working on the feet or hands to enable the body to heal itself. Following illness, stress, injury, or disease, the body can become imbalanced, with blocked energy pathways preventing proper function. Reflexology aims to restore and maintain the body’s natural equilibrium and promote healing by addressing not just symptoms, but the whole person.

This deeply relaxing and therapeutic treatment applies gentle pressure to the feet, restoring the free flow of energy throughout the body. Reflexology can reduce stress, boost the immune system, alleviate pain, improve circulation, and increase energy levels, leading to a sense of overall well-being and harmony.

The art of reflexology was first developed in Ancient Egypt, India, and China. Dr. William Fitzgerald introduced it to the West in 1913 as ‘zone therapy.’ He observed that reflex areas on the feet and hands were linked to other body parts and organs within the same zone. In the 1930s, Eunice Ingham further developed this theory into modern reflexology, noting that congestion or tension in any part of the foot mirrored issues in corresponding parts of the body.
